Richard Ruben, founder of Seasons To Taste™, is a chef, cookbook author, cooking teacher, writer and food consultant. A graduate of the California Culinary Academy, Ruben spent half a decade traveling and working in Asia and Australia before moving back to his hometown of New York. Ruben was honored by International Association of Culinary Professionals with their 2003 Award of Excellence Cooking School Teacher of the Year.
Ruben combines his love for culinary adventure and world flavors with a straightforward cooking style that can actually be done at home. This approach to food allows Ruben to reinterpret cuisines from the classic eastern European food of his childhood to the spiciness of his favorite El Salvadorian snack into recipes for the home cook. Ruben’s fusion of culinary history and everyday culture is the true reflection of the way we eat today and America’s culinary melting pot.
Ruben is one of the most celebrated cooking instructors at ICE, formerly Peter Kump’s Cooking School. His dynamic Green Market classes are chronicled in his first cookbook, The Farmer’s Market Cookbook, published by The Lyons Press, fall 2000. The book was a top “Pic” from People magazine and was awarded Best of the Best 2000 by Food & Wine.
Ruben is affectionately known as the Green Market Guru and his sold-out classes showcase his eclectic, fresh approach to shopping for and cooking food. His improvisational market class focuses on “being in the moment” in the market and choosing foods at the peak of the season. Ruben guides students through the season's cornucopia to its final destination--the table--by teaching simple cooking techniques that showcase the natural flavors of the ingredients. His Green Market class has been featured on FoxNews.com, NY1; New York City's television news station, SELF Magazine and TIME OUT NYC.
Ruben has worked for both corporate and private clients (USDA, Apple Computer, Weight Watchers, Barnes and Noble, Calvin Klein Cosmetics, Quest International, Givaudan, Unilever, OXO, All Clad, Condé Nast, Oxygen Media, Food and Wine Magazine). He is generally regarded as a food expert by the media and has appeared on the Food Network and Fine Living Network; the nationally syndicated, American Journal; NBC’s Later Today, The Jane Pauley Show, Your Total Health and the Home Shopping Network as well as WOR Radio’s, Food Talk. In addition, Ruben teaches classes, lectures worldwide and has written food essays and feature articles for national cooking magazines including Cooking Light, and is the author of www.unitedtaste.blogspot.com.
When not in the kitchen, Ruben can be found tending his gardening in the Foothills of the Smokey Mountains.
